R & D Journal of the South African Institution of Mechanical Engineering 2013, 29, 36-43 http://www.saimeche.org.za (open access) © SAIMechE All rights reserved. 36 Uncertainty and false alarms exist in the operational environment of autonomous marine robots. This paper presents the investigations on obstacle detection and avoidance model of an autonomous marine vehicle using ultrasonic sensors and probabilistic techniques in uncertainty identification in the development of an unmanned surface vehicle (USV). Probabilistic techniques were used in modelling the realistic environmental uncertainties of the autonomous marine vehicle. Coherence and non-coherence of sonar signals were investigated and its functions simplified to address the deterministic and un-deterministic modelling variables that were identified in the realistic domain of the USV. The results obtained from the models were adapted into the control algorithm of the USV to reduce the uncertainties present in the guidance and control of the USV.

Modelling the performance of USV manoeuvring and target tracking: an approach using frequency modulated continuous wave radar rotary system

The performance of frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar in tracking targets is presented and analysed. Obstacle detection, target tracking and radar target tracking performance models are developed and were used to investigate and to propose ways of improving the autonomous motion of unmanned surface vehicle (USV). Possible factors affecting the performance of FMCW radar in tracking...

Stereo obstacle detection for unmanned surface vehicles by IMU-assisted semantic segmentation

A new obstacle detection algorithm for unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) is presented. A state-of-the-art graphical model for semantic segmentation is extended to incorporate boat pitch and roll measurements from the on-board inertial measurement unit (IMU), and a stereo verification algorithm that consolidates tentative detections obtained from the segmentation is proposed. The IMU readings are...

A Graphical Model for Rapid Obstacle Image-Map Estimation from Unmanned Surface Vehicles

Obstacle detection plays an important role in unmanned surface vehicles (USV). Continuous detection from images taken onboard the vessel poses a particular challenge due to the diversity of the environment and the obstacle appearance. An obstacle may be a floating piece of wood, a scuba diver, a pier, or some other part of a shoreline. In this paper we tackle this problem by proposing a new gra...

Comparative Study of Random Matrices Capability in Uncertainty Detection of Pier’s Dynamics

Because of random nature of many dependent variables in coastal engineering, treatment of effective parameters is generally associated with uncertainty. Numerical models are often used for dynamic analysis of complex structures, including mechanical systems. Furthermore, deterministic models are not sufficient for exact anticipation of structure’s dynamic response, but probabilistic models...
